Kentucky Bourbon Tour FAQ | Horse & Barrel Experiences
What is a bourbon tour?
When people ask “What happens on a bourbon tour?”, the answer is simple: it’s an immersive behind-the-scenes look at how Kentucky’s signature spirit is made. You’ll walk through distilleries, visit barrel houses, and enjoy guided bourbon tastings. Each stop tells a story — from the limestone water that starts the process to the charred oak barrels that give bourbon its rich flavor.
How long does a bourbon tour take?
Most Kentucky bourbon tours last between 7 and 9 hours depending on the number of distilleries you visit. Our tour experiences typically include three to five tastings and/or tours, and a stop for lunch at a local favorite.
Which distilleries can I visit near Lexington?
Some of the most popular distilleries on our routes include:
Woodford Reserve in Versailles
Buffalo Trace in Frankfort
Castle & Key in Millville
Four Roses and Wild Turkey in Lawrenceburg
James E. Pepper and Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. right here in downtown Lexington.
We rotate itineraries to give guests the best blend of heritage and craft distilleries whenever possible.
Do your bourbon tours include transportation?
Yes! All tours include private transportation with a professional driver. You can relax, sip, and enjoy the day — no need to worry about directions or designated drivers.
What should I wear to a bourbon distillery?
We recommend casual, comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Distillery floors can be uneven, and you’ll spend time both indoors and outdoors.
Do I need to love bourbon to enjoy a tour?
Not at all. Even non-drinkers enjoy the architecture, storytelling, and Southern hospitality. Many distilleries also offer cocktails, mocktails, and gift shops filled with Kentucky-made goods.
What’s included in the price of a Horse & Barrel tour?
Your booking includes:
Distillery admissions and tastings - when applicable
Luxury round-trip transportation
Professional guide and driver
Bottled water and light snacks
Lunch options and private upgrades are available upon request.
Can I buy bourbon bottles during the tour?
Yes! Many distilleries offer limited-edition bottles available only onsite. Your driver will store any bottles safely during the day so you can enjoy the rest of your experience.
Do you offer private or corporate bourbon tours?
Yes — we specialize in private group tours for birthdays, corporate retreats, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and client outings. Custom branding, pickup, and catering options are available.
When is the best time to visit Kentucky for bourbon tours?
Kentucky’s bourbon country shines in spring and fall when the weather is mild and the scenery is stunning. Winter offers a quieter, more intimate experience.
Do you offer pickup from the airport or hotels?
Yes! We provide door-to-door pickup from Lexington area hotels, vacation rentals, and Blue Grass Airport (LEX). Private transfers from the Central Kentucky and Bardstown areas are also available. Unfortunately we do not pick up from the Louisville area at this time.
